From Hunger, Thirst, Deportation, Destruction, Bombing – Our Children Are Bleeding, The Jews Did Not Give Us Even Salty Sea Water, They Forced Us Out At Sunset Without Food, Water, Medicine, They Burned Our Men, Women and Children. Sixty Five Families Were Forced Out, Our Clothes Were Burned, We Had To Leave, Leaving Everything Behind, We Have Nothing…Not Even Water To Break Our Fast…
This is a transcript from an interview by Al-Jazeera from a Palestinian lady Jamila Al-Hassi who was trapped in one of the buildings surrounding the Al-Shifa Hospital Complex. Mrs Jamila Al-Hassi gave this gruesome account whilst walking nowhere along with others who were forced out and the building was set on fire.
Interviewer: If you could give us an idea about your situation now in that regard.
Our situation is very, very sad. Our situation is as bleak as I can tell you. You don’t know what we are in, whether we are hungry or thirsty from deportation, from destruction, from bombing on children, the sick and the injured on those we left behind who were bleeding to death.
They were targeting the sick and injured children. Mothers were watching their injured children crying and bleeding from their injuries. They took a mother away, her son was bleeding…
My sick daughter was bleeding. If you walk and bleed, every step bleeds.
The old people, those with Down’s syndrome, those on carts Israeli soldiers forced them out. They took us away while we were alone and the world was watching.
We had been fasting for six days while trapped inside, abstaining from water, food I don’t want to tell you what we live on because…
We called for everyone but no one listened to us. We cried a lot and cried a lot, we pleaded and pleaded for six days…
We called for the Red Cross, once, twice and ten times to come and get us out. Where can we take the sick and the injured? There is nothing to stop the bleeding in sick children.
Where do we go with them? They are hungry and thirsty. We begged for water for the sick children. They would not give us even salty water. To whom should we appeal?
We left the building and we are walking. We are heading to nowhere. A number of people, a number of the injured children, women, elderly people, walking. We don’t know where we are going.
Currently, the bombing in the region continues and does not remain silent.
Every second we pray for our souls. The shelling continues, people are being martyred before our eyes. People are getting injured next to us. The old people, the sick, the elderly – no one is looking for anyone else.
I am talking to you now, but everything around us is burning, there are drones flying around us. All places are burned, from buildings to hospitals, from anything, it is completely burned, every place.
We have been fasting for six days despite Ramadan and despite the war, despite the siege…
We are adults and we can live without food and water, but we are asking for the children? At least give them salty water. They cut off even salty water… the Jews.
I swear, there is nothing left for us. We have no food, no water, we are besieged. The sick, the wounded, the children.
Al-Shifa Medical Hospital is a War-zone. It is far worse than what you see on your television screens.
They raped women, kidnapped women, pulled some from under the rubble and unleashed dogs upon them. The women call out for help and when we try to reach them they shoot at us.
They have nothing to discredit us in any way. We are enduring a horrific and brutal physical and psychological war with hunger, thirst, and unbearable injuries.
People are walking, despite the bombing, despite the destruction, and despite the death all around them. We are walking, we do not know where.
Interviewer: Let us mention that you have launched repeated appeals to the Red Cross to deliver medicine to deliver food?
I just want to know what are the Red Cross? Are they our enemies? Are they the Israelis? Who are they?
They are able to deliver to the soldiers? But they would not deliver to us – even water!
Why is the Red Cross safe and we are not? What have our children done to them?
Why do they have food and water and we do not? The Red Cross is a lie.
What would we gain from appealing to the Red Cross?
This is the fifth time we have been under siege. Every time we have called the Red Cross they have said, “Okay Jamilah, we will keep you updated” and we face more war, more hunger, more thirst, more martyrs, more diseases. This is what the Red Cross does.
Interviewer: Where are you walking to?
We don’t know. Sixty five families were forced out, they took away our clothes. They burnt our clothes, they burnt our men, women and children, we had to leave, leaving everything behind.
They burned the UNDP building in the vicinity of Shifa hospital where we were so we were forced to leave. They are targeting everything, not only the Al Shifa hospital.
I cannot even describe the horror. I have no words. These are the hardest of the six days. I have never seen anything as bad in this ugly war…
Interviewer: Where are you going?
I don’t know where we are going. We are fasting, we have children with us wounded people carrying on our shoulders, we don’t know where we are going, we don’t know where to go, we don’t.
We can’t even break our fast with water!
When the children with us tell you, “I am hungry.” “I’m thirsty”, you can’t do anything for them anymore
I am speechless….
According to the Palestine Chronicle dated Sunday 24 March 2024:
The army demanded that the Palestinians inside the hospital “head out for torture, investigation, and execution,” according to the Gaza government media office.
The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it executed 170 Palestinians and detained hundreds for interrogations, transferring at least 160 of them to Israel.
The Israeli army threatened to destroy the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in northern Gaza with medical teams and patients inside, the media office in the enclave said on Saturday.
“We received testimonies from inside Al-Shifa Medical Complex indicating that the Israeli occupation army threatened the medical staff and the displaced people sheltering there that it would destroy the hospital buildings with them inside,” the Gaza government media office said in a statement.
The army demanded that the Palestinians inside the hospital “head out for torture, investigation, and execution,” it added.
The media office condemned the “organized crime” that the Israeli army continues to commit “with all brutality and vengeance.”
It held the US administration and the international community “fully responsible” for the raids.
This is the second time that Israeli forces have raided the complex since the start of the war on Gaza last October 7, as they previously raided it last November 16 after a week-long siege, then withdrew after 8 days, during which its yards, parts of its buildings, medical equipment, and even the power generator were destroyed.
